MORLEY – A tale of two halves on Tuesday saw Shelby’s boys basketball team trailing big to Morley-Stanwood at halftime, only to fight their way to a 51-47 win in the end.
The Mohawks came out hot, connecting on seven 3-point buckets in the first half. Meanwhile, Shelby made only four shots from the field and compounded that poor shooting effort with 14 turnovers. That recipe had the Tigers trailing 35-14 at halftime.
After watching their opponent score the first basket of the second half, Shelby went on an 18-3 run for the remainder of the third quarter to make it a 40-32 hole heading into the final quarter.
Good defense and rebounding allowed Shelby to close the gap in the final frame. Freshman Eli Kelley hit a 3-pointer to tie things at 47-47 and was followed up by key points from Wyatt Dickman and Treyjin Waller to help seal the win.
Dickman led the Tigers with 14 points, five rebounds and two steals while Waller had 12 points and eight rebounds. Phillip Hayes chipped in 13 points, six rebounds and three steals and Lalo Garcia added seven points, six rebounds and five steals.
“We need to learn to come out and play with a sense of urgency for the whole game no matter the score,” Shelby coach Rick Zoulek said.
Shelby (3-10, 1-5 WMC Rivers) will hope to carry their second half momentum into a rivalry game with Hart on Friday.
