FREMONT – The Fremont boys basketball team are Division 2 district champions after edging out Newaygo, 50-45, on Friday evening.

“It was an awesome environment to play in,” said Fremont coach Adam Bowen. “Fans and students from both schools packed the gym and were treated to a great game.”

The Lions opened hot and took a quick 10-3 lead in the opening minutes before the Packers’ defense solidified and held Newaygo to just nine more points for a 24-19 lead at halftime.

The Packers outscored the Lions in the third quarter to go up 40-26, then proceeded to eat up the clock. Chaz Miller iced the game for Fremont by making two key free throws with five seconds left to play.

Gavin Richards posted a double-double for the Packers with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Chaz Miller had 12 points and four steals while Will DeBlake scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds. Ben Mellema put up eight points.

“I am so proud of these boys for how they have come together as a team this week,” Bowen said. “We’ve worked through a lot as a team this year, and to have it all finally come together at the right time is great to see.”

The Lions’ Logan Klomp scored 13 points and Hunter Yearsovich added 11 points. Josiah Long scored nine points and Blake Kerr chipped in eight points.

Fremont (11-14) is set to face Spring Lake on Tuesday at Allendale to open the regional tournament.
