MANTON — Manistee’s girls basketball team survived a terrible shooting night at the free throw line and pulled out a 61-58 victory over Pine River in a Division 2 district opening-round matchup Monday night.

The Mariners (10-13) missed 16 free throws and know they can’t be doing that if they hope to move on further in the postseason. Manistee plays host Manton at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

After trailing the Bucks 16-13 at the end of the first quarter, the Mariners rallied with a big second quarter to take a 10-point lead, 39-29, at the half.

Pine River wouldn’t go away, however, and narrowed the gap to five, 47-42, at the end of three.

Jayna Edmondson had another big game for the Mariners with 18 points and nine rebounds. Libby McCarthy and Alayna Edmondson added nine each. Grace Witmer scored seven and Avamae Fett six.

McCarthy also pulled down 11 rebounds and came away with six steals and dished out four assists. Alayna Edmondson also had four assists. Jayna Edmondson gathered in nine rebounds.
