GAYLORD – The Fruitport Trojans earned a spot in the Division 2 regional soccer championship game with a 2-0 shutout victory over Marquette.

The Trojans moved into a four-way tie for the most consecutive shutouts in MHSAA soccer history with 13. Lansing New Covenant Christian had 16 straight in 2008.

On Tuesday, Fruitport and Marquette battled to a scoreless tie after one half. Early in the second half, lightning was spotted and the game was stopped for 90 minutes.

When play resumed, Fruitport went to work and popped in a pair of goals in the final 11 minutes of the game. Sophomore Jorge Burgos-Yack scored the first goal and Ryder Merkins added an insurance tally with less than 9 minutes remaining to put the Trojans up a pair of goals. Burgos-Yack assisted in the Merkins’ goal.

Logan Werschem posted another shutout in net for the Trojans, who have won 14 games in a row.

Fruitport outshot Marquette, 9-4.
