MESICK — Walkerville’s boys basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a tight 36-33 West Michigan D League win at Mesick Friday night.

The Wildcats used a balanced attack with Collin Chase leading the way with 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Zeontae De La Paz was held scoreless, but stepped up big under the glass with 17 rebounds.

“Mesick took control of the game early, and held the lead most of the first half,” said Walkerville coach Lee Oomen. “We made some adjustments at halftime and came out and got ahead early in the fourth quarter. We struggled taking care of the ball all night, and couldn’t hit many open shots. It was a real old fashioned barn burner as neither team played very well.”

After both teams finished the first quarter tied, 8-8, the Bulldogs moved in front, 18-12 at the half.

The Wildcats started their comeback with a 15-9 third quarter, forging another tie, 27-27. Walkerville pulled the game out with a 9-6 fourth period.

Walkerville improved to 3-4 overall and 3-2 in the league. The Wildcats travel to Big Rapids Crossroads Academy Wednesday, Jan. 3.
