MESICK — Mason County Eastern split a West Michigan D League girls softball doubleheader with the Mesick Bulldogs on the road Thursday, winning the opener 9-8 and losing the nightcap 15-4.

In the first game Miley Kessel pitched six innings. She had nine strikeouts and four walks.

Bridget Whitaker drove in four runs on four hits, including a home run, to lead the Cardinals. Kessel also drove in four runs, while Avery Crawford and Aubrey Myers had two hits each.

Brailyn Johnson pitched one inning with one strikeout, walking one and allowing three hits in the second game. Kessel pitched three innings, struck out two, walked eight and allowed four hits.

Offensively Myers had two hits, Whitaker and Addison Malburg had one hit each.

“We had to have patience at the plate tonight, between both games we took 19 bases on balls,” said Eastern coach Jennnifer Whitaker.
“However, being aggressive with the bat served up 16 strikeouts.   The girls are fighting hard both on offense and defense, but eight total errors on the field shows some inexperience within the team. Each time we take the field I see their confidence and their strength grow.”

On deck for the Cardinals is a non-conference twinbill Monday at Eastern’s field.
